The main parts of the Beginning African Hairstyles course cover natural Black hair care, care and maintenance of texturized or relaxed hair, cornrows and parting patterns, dreadlocks, and basic extensions.

In the bonus lessons you'll also get some skills with flat twists, box braids, hairweaving and other topics that take some training to do without causing your clients to lose their hair.  You know...the stuff folks don't generally like to tell other people in forums and mailing lists.

The course is so inexpensive that you'll make your money back with your first client or two.  There is also an advanced course for those who desire professional training, and a specific course in hair extensions for those who are already professionals, and just want to learn hair extensions, tree braids, interlocking and such.

Instructor: Nicole Lasher (Kthulah)
Email: kthulah@kthulah.com
Availability:  Usually Daily
Instructor's Time Zone:  Jerusalem (usually GMT+2)

Educational Requirements: No prior courses necessary, but reasonable manual dexterity and the ability to follow instructions, and some experience doing hair is suggested.  If you can comb your own hair, and braid three pieces of string, you should be okay.

Goals:  To give hair artists and aspiring loctitians a good start, and provide a way for people to ask someone experienced questions in a professional environment.

Reading Materials: All supplementary texts are available for free on the internet.

Grading Policy:  Certificates available for academic performance, participation in the forums, attendance, and completion of the course.  Students are expected to read the lessons thoroughly, and complete the assignments thoughtfully.  Students also have the option once they've completed all the course work, to remain as teacher's assistants as a means of networking with other braid artists and loctitians.

Required Equipment:
  • Basic hair care supplies including barrettes, hairpins, etc.
  • A person to practice on or a beauty student head or one of those large doll heads on a stand that can be bought at a toy store or a babydoll with a healthy head of hair.
  • A packet of bulk hair for braiding or a weft of hair for weaving, depending on how lucky you feel.
  • A small pack of "pony beads".
  • Optionally, you may want to use a digital camera, but this is not required.  You'll have a choice of either a photo assignment or written assignments.

This course is designed to get you on your way to being a hair artist or loctitian.  It is also a good course for new parents of children of African descent who have no experience with it, or home health care providers and volunteers who take care of people of African descent.  This course is illustrated so that whatever can't be explained well with words, you'll see pictures of.
